Chapter 11

Cruz came down inside the gates of the Lockwood compound. Honey's grandfather, Black Jack, liked things old school, thus the rugged setting. If the gruff old Bear had his way, they'd all be living in caves. After sleeping with Honey last night, Cruz had known he'd have to settle this with the old bastard to keep her safe. He'd left her in the care of his brothers, partly because he didn't want to see her mate them, but also because he knew that he could trust them to keep her safe.

He walked down the path, feeling spying eyes on him, but kept loose. As expected when he stepped toward the council fire, Black Jack's guards shambled out of the mist and flanked him. He cast an eye over the motley older crew guarding the place. Obviously the young Werebear warriors and females were out in the mate hunt making it a vulnerable time for all concerned. He was surprised that Black Jack had allowed his numbers to be so weakened. Cruz kept a tighter rein on his own people.

Black Jack arched a wooly brow as he cast a surly glance his way. “Heard you tried to invade our territory the other day, boy. You've got a hell of a nerve coming back here."

"I was here on a rescue mission,” Cruz said, grimly impatient that his mission was delayed by this old news. “One of your women sent out a distress call. I came to check it out."

"What kind of distress call?” the old man demanded.

"She texted my brother that she needed help,” he admitted, seeing the older man frown even though he rolled his eyes at the text reference.

"I haven't heard of anyone in trouble. Who was it?"

Cruz hesitated. If the distress call had been genuine it might be a mistake to say her name but everything in him said it had been a ruse to pull Lane into danger.

Black Jack saw his hesitation and waved his guards back so they couldn't overhear.

Cruz gave him a nod. “She said she was Sheila."

"You sure about that, boy? There is no Sheila in our clan."

"I figured that out, once I got jumped,” Cruz said wryly.

"Didn't stop you from injuring one of my sentries,” Black Jack said with a growl.

Cruz remembered the sentry who'd challenged him while he was limping back to the exit portal. “Sorry about that. I couldn't tell if he was in league with the smelly bastard who jumped me."

"So what are you doing back here? There were some who said your clan wanted war."

Cruz stepped closer to the man. “And there are some from my camp who think you want war. We both know it's bullshit. We have more personal matters to discuss.” He stepped closer, stopped masking, and knew the instant the old man sensed Honey's essence on him. He'd wear her brand until he was either chosen or eliminated by the fates.

Black Jack let out a low growl of outrage when he looked at him and sniffed the air, and then he waved his guards away.
